The Itakpo Festival, also known as the Feast of Passover, which took place in Ososo, Edo State, in February 2024. This incredible event, which occurs every seven years, was a momentous occasion that brought people together and showcased our rich cultural heritage.
The theme of this year’s festival was “Osunomogwo,” reflecting the strong bond and unity of our three celebrating kindred: Ubereni, Ukporikpo, and Ugbedu. The festival marked an important milestone in our community – the transition of young men from boyhood to manhood. It was a moment of pride and celebration, as they joined the elder’s assembly and took on new responsibilities.
The Itakpo Festival also commemorated the historical migration of our ancestors from the ancient Benin Kingdom to our present-day settlement in Ososo. This remarkable journey took years, with our forefathers stopping at various locations along the way. To honor their memory, we visited these sites and reenacted our migration story during the festival.
The festival was a vibrant celebration of our history, resilience, and victories. It was a time to reconnect with our roots and celebrate our dignity, which has been passed down through generations. We don’t take this for granted, and we’re proud to share our story with the world.
The event featured an array of cultural displays, traditional costumes, and stunning hairstyles. We enjoyed musical concerts and other exciting side attractions. It was an unforgettable experience that brought our community together and showcased our rich cultural heritage to over 500,000 visitors from across the country and beyond.
